Government of India is working on COVID-19 Tracker App

However, it is still unclear when and how the government will launch this Coronavirus tracker app. Currently, another coronavirus tracking app of the Indian government is available for Android users on the Google Play Store.

According to News18, this app is being made by NITI Aayog and soon it will be made available for download on Google Play Store and Apple App Store. According to the report, the CoWin-20 app has been made available for some users.

Purpose of this app

1. Monitoring the community spread of coronavirus through user location.

2. To alert the user when he is around the person suffering from Coronavirus.

3. This app will send notifications to users who were close to the user and are now found to be COVID-19 positive.

The beta version of the CoWin-20 app has also been used by The Next Web. They found that the government would acquire users' data regarding the Coronavirus via Bluetooth. The report claims, "This app checks via Bluetooth whether you have been 6 feet away from a coronavirus victim."

The report further states that this app will be given a map-like feature, which will continue to trace the location history of the user. The report mentions, "Thanks to Map-19, for the past 14 days I have been able to see all the places I have been and all those people who were 5 feet away from me."

Next Web suspects that some features in the beta version of the CoWin-20 app will not be included in its final version. The report says that this app will first ask for permission for location data access, the user's privacy may be questioned about this.
